About CHO, Dong Hee(趙東姫):
I am a communication designer, usually known as a ‘Graphic Designer’. But besides my design work I started to make my own projects such as building a water pump in Africa and making a mathematics book for children in need with participants from various fields since 2009. I try to find ways to solve problems in the world utilizing design and communication.
I believe that we can make the world a better place with the help of design, and during my travels in South-east Asia between 2015 - 2016, I met the Karen people in Melakee village when I visited their elephant camp, which is the first camp run by a Karen community. I liked the villagers and wanted to make a small but sustainable business with them. So I came up with an idea of making and selling something using their hand-made textiles.

My Little Forest & Noriage:
My Little Forest is a handicraft brand inspired by the Korean traditional ornament <Goebul Norigae>, which is believed to keep bad spirits away. Our ancestors believed that it’s three sharp points would protect us from the three disasters; fire, water and wind. The original norigaes are usually made by silk or cotton but our norigaes are made by the textiles hand-woven by the Karen women groups in Chiang Mai. We also use Job’s tears from Chiang Mai to connect each element. |
How it works:
Making the textiles and norigaes, the women group can not only save money to support their children’s education, but they can also improve their self-esteem by doing work that they can do well. The textiles are made in two more Karen tribe women groups in Pipor village and Leogra village with the help of the researchers in Highland Research and Development Institution in Chiang Mai and some of the profit goes back to hill tribe women groups and community-based tourism. |
Message to EDiversity & Hong Kong:
I am glad to hear that our norigae can be used to celebrate EDiversity’s 5th anniversary because it is also made to support better education of the hill tribe communities. It is meaningful for us! As I was born in S.Korea, which was one of the poorest countries in the world only 60 years ago, I recognize the importance of education to improve our society, not only in economical ways, but also in political ways. Even though this is a difficult time, I hope you will protect all the rights you deserve for yourself and your descendants in the end. I send you a warm wish in the norigae for all of you.
